Our Mission: To promote existing Berkshire County efforts for children in addition to facilitating initiatives to ensure that all children enter 1st grade ready to maximize their potential.

United Way Success By 6 is a national community-based movement of public and private partners that work together to deliver proven solutions that ensure all children ages zero to six are healthy, nurtured and ready to succeed. In Berkshire County, United Way Success By 6 is a volunteer coalition of business leaders and community service agencies that focuses awareness on children's issues with the goal of creating effective community-based solutions that contribute to the positive quality of life for young children here in Berkshire County.

Dan Dillon, Retired President of Berkshire United Way, formally introduced the initiative to a group of Berkshire County Community leaders that focuses on the needs of early childhood development. The SB6 model adopted establishes a countywide coalition of businesses, schools, public services, medical providers, families and childcare providers. The SB6 coalition builds a community dialogue on early childhood education and promotes school preparedness to the top of our community's priority list.

Berkshire County already has a tremendous pool of traditional resources for families and children. The county has done quite well at establishing a wide network of professional childcare providers, support resources, and social services. It is time to augment those efforts with a unique approach to early childhood development. The SB6 initiative will pull in resources that may not have previously identified their role in lives of young children and their families.

Through Success By 6, we want the business community to realize that they are an integral partner in every family. Through that relationship, we are in the position to help families prepare their children for their educational experience. The options for corporate involvement are limitless and can be accomplished through Advisory Board involvement, sponsorships, human resource policy, community outreach and corporate culture, for starters.

One popular annual event organized by SB6 is the "Think Kids" family fun day in May (see calendar for details). A "Think Kids" resource guide produced by SB6 is distributed at the event. The guide contains valuable information pertaining to development, health, nutrition and safety of children. The guide also includes a directory of community organizations and businesses that cater children under the age of six and their families. Future plans include seminars and presentations by featured speakers on children's issues.

The Advisory Board is open to all public and private organizations throughout Berkshire County. SB6 is convinced that everyone in the community can have a direct and positive impact on the success of our children.
