Rensselaer County was formed 24 March 1791 out of Albany County. The county seat is in Troy.
Rensselaer County is in the northern part of the Hudson River Valley, about 12 miles distant from Albany.

The original districts (formed 1772) of Rensselaer County were Rensselaerswick, Hoosick, Pittstown and Schaghticoke. These districts became towns in 1788.
