Firewalling
A Firewall is a collections of tools that form a security policy. Although it can often be implemented with a single tool or machine, (often called a "Firewall in a Box") typically a Firewall spans several machines and atleast two Ethernet segments. On the other hand, simple firewalls can be achieved simply from the use of packet filters on your exterior router that are designed to permit only certain types of traffic.
Commonly used tools in the construction of Firewalls are packet filters on your exterior router with a multihomed machine running an HTTP/FTP proxy seperating your internal trusted network from your untrusted perimiter network. For added security, proxy servers often have routing between their multiple interfaces turned off so that traffic cannot pass freely between your permiter and internal network. E-Mail can be delivered to a machine (often called a Bastion Host) on your perimiter network can be handled directly through your proxy host.
BerkshireNet can work with your organization to balance costs and features to provide a firewalling solution that is right for you. For details, please contact BerkshireNet.
