Written by Marsha Norman

Directed by Tom Reardon

The play explores complexities of the mother-daughter relationship and explores the final hour in the life of Jessie who has decided that life is no longer worth living.

The play takes place in the living room of a small house on an isolated country road. The house is shared by Jessie Cates and her mother, Thelma. Jessie's loveless marriage has ended in divorce and her life has become stale. She has given up on life as anything remotely resembling fun. Her mother, Thlema, doesn't deal with problems head on and fails to listen to her cries for help until it's too late.

This evening, Jessie calmly announces that she intends to kill herself. Her mother refuses to take her seriously. As Jessie tidys the house and begins to make lists of things to be looked after, her Mother finally senses her desperate helplessness. In the end, she can only stand by as Jessie closes her bedroom door.
