THE BERKSHIRE FAMILY HISTORY ASSOCIATION is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, understanding and appreciation of family history and genealogy.

Organized in 1975, the association now includes members in all fifty states as well as Canada, Mexico and abroad. Members share two interests in common, a dedication to family research and ancestral roots in Berkshire County, Massachusetts.

All members receive BERKSHIRE GENEALOGIST, a quarterly journal devoted to the dissemination of previously unpublished local records of a genealogical nature. Our editorial staff is also regularly engaged in the publication of research materials of a more extensive nature than is suitable for a periodical publication, and our list of such works is growing ever larger. In addition to the publication of basic research material we also create indexes for previously published works that either have a very poor index or none at all. We feel that we are giving these old books a new lease on life by providing better research access.

Throughout nearly its entire existence, our group has provided fund raising services to the Department of Local History and Genealogy of the Berkshire Athenaeum, Pittsfield's Public Library. Over that period we have granted over $180,000 in funding, which is used to purchase needed research materials and equipment. The addition of our contributions to its regular public funding has enabled the department to take a quantum leap forward in its usefulness as a research center. Its Visitors' Register lists the names of many who have come great distances to take advantage of the department's unique and extensive collections.

BFHA publishes Berkshire Genealogist, a compilation of censuses, indices, reports, cemetery and church records, etc. four times yearly. For the past twenty-eight years, BFHA has provided research, expertise and educational programs for its members and genealogists throughout the U.S. It is located in the cultural Berkshires, the westernmost county of Massachusetts. No financial support is received from any governmental agency. BFHA is funded entirely by membership dues and other private sources.

BFHA has a very close relationship with the Local History and Genealogy Department of the Berkshire Athenaeum. Most of the association's records and documents are deposited in the local History Department.
